What is it?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of
medical treatment known, having been used in China for over 3000 years. Needles
are inserted into specific areas of the body known as acupuncture points. The
needles are extremely fine and do not have a cutting edge, consequently it is
extremely rare for bleeding to occur. When the needles are inserted, most
people describe the sensation as a numbness, tingling, or mild discomfort or
ache.
Our physiotherapists have extensive training in
acupuncture and deploy strictest hygiene - only pre-sterilised disposable
needles are used.
How does it work?
There are many theories - the traditional Chinese
view is that Qi (energy) flows freely when the body is in a healthy state. If
there is a problem, energy stagnates. The stimulation of appropriate
acupuncture points frees this stagnation. The modern, scientific view is that
acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals
called endorphins. These assist the body to heal itself and gain pain relief.
There is increasing scientific evidence to support this view.
What conditions is it used for?
Our physiotherapists are in a unique position of being able to combine
acupuncture with other treatment methods such as exercise, manipulation and
massage. Acupuncture is effective for any conditions requiring pain relief such
as back and neck pain, or any in situations where the body needs help with
healing, for example a ligament sprain or a torn muscle.
