How does it work?
Developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates, it is a
discipline which lengthens, strengthens and realignes the body by working on key
postural muscles. The exercises are a combination of slow, precise movements
with specific breathing patterns which are appropriate for individuals of all
ages and fitness levels.
The initial emphasis is on learning how to control the
body’s deep abdominal stabilising muscles or “core muscles”. With improved "core
stability", postural problems can be reduced or eliminated and efficiency of
movement maintained. Pilates goes far beyond your core muscles however and not
only provides a complete body workout (you will be working muscles you didn't
even know you had!), but also helps you develop an awareness of how your body
works, helping your mind and body to work in harmony.
What conditions is it used for?
Pilates is appropriate
for:
- Rehabilitation of injury
- Pain
management
- Postural
correction
- Improving balance, strength and
flexibility
- Decreasing stress
- Pre and post natal health and well
being.
